[Text] Write about someone you know named Sarah.

One of the most common names in the world, describe your Sarah.

Was she the class cheerleader? Was she your first kiss? Was Sarah the name of your waitress at dinner? Was she the girl in the cubicle next to you who had the aloe plant?

Tell me about your Sarah, or Sara.

Sometimes when I'm stuck, I find that it helps to get the creative juices flowing to write about something I know.

Phantom Limb [Text]

Give me your best shot at describing what its like to have a phantom limb.

As I understand it, a phantom limb is where you still feel like you have a limb, but you physically don't. It still has the ability to feel pain, you might reach for things and expect to grab them even though you don't have an arm, or expect to walk even though you don't have a leg.

Put it in what ever form you want, but tell me about your ghostly appendage.

Earthquake

So, I've lived in Central California my entire life, and have ended up sleeping through every earthquake we've ever had. It's very disappointing. So, /r/PromptOfTheDay, make it up to me. Write about an earthquake today. It could be the earthquake that ends the world, or simply a little shake that influences your story in some way. Hell, you could have Cthulhu climb out of the rift if you want. Have fun!

[TEXT] I Have Finally Chosen How I Will Die (xpost from /r/WritingPrompts)

Earth. Not our Earth, but an alternate dimension. The difference between this Earth and ours is the population. The population there is ten times larger. There was a law created: On your 40th birthday, you will die. You have two options: Either the government will track you down and kill you or you kill yourself.

The Death Day is one of final celebration. Your character has finally chosen their method of death. What is this method? What does it mean to them, if anything? How are they feeling?

[MOD POST] Writing game idea

Hey guys, Mad_Cowboy here. I've had an idea for a writing game that would involve the entire /r/promptoftheday community if they wanted to be involved. Basically, it's a story we all write together, 1 week, 1 person and 200-300 words at a time with a new prompt for each week.

How it works is everyone who signs up (if we do this there will be a signup post a few weeks prior) will be rostered on to write on a certain week (this roster will be public knowledge, so if you do sign up and can't do that week then let us know and we'll change it). The first person to write will do so on a prompt written by the Moderators, (note: all the prompts must be vague, as we don't want to restrict the story to a specific storyline) and that person will have one week in which to write a 200-300 word short story with an open ending for the next writer to continue.

During that week, we can all suggest prompts for the next instalment of the story, and the prompt with the most upvotes at the end of the week will be the prompt used for the next week.

If someone doesn't finish there story in time, the mods will message them and they will have 2 days to send in their story otherwise the next scheduled writer will start from where the previous instalment left off, and the game will continue.

There will be 3 day breaks in between each instalment, to both give us time in case someone doesn't finish their story and to give the next writer time to familiarize him/herself with the story so far.

This will continue for an unknown period of time (probably until the story gets too old), and then if there's enough interest we will start another one.

So what are your thoughts on this idea, is it good or is it bad? If it's bad, what would you change in order to make it good? We're looking for your feedback here, it is after all, your community, we're just the guys who try to keep it running smoothly.

Also, just a quick reminder. If you want to know anything about /r/promptoftheday please, message the moderators, we'd be glad to help, same if there's anything you'd like to see us do in the future. It's your community, so you should influence what it's like.

The Redemption

Your character redeems themselves through an unprecedented act of self-sacrifice after living a life of hatred and violence.

Consider carefully. What event might cause someone to completely change the way they perceive the world? It will have to be extremely powerful in its impact on them, though it could be something insignificant that triggers that reaction.

The Eternal War

Soldiers of the future are simply personalities stored digitally. Each time one is needed, it is simply loaded into a robotic surrogate body and sent to fight.

The war has now raged for generations. The only thing it costs is money. Action is confined to carefully managed War Zones around the world. There are rarely human casualties. The stored personalities are recycled and reused as needed. They do their jobs, they never complain, they always follow orders.

Until today.

The Deep. (Resubmitting due to post failure)

I'm resubmitting this as I think it failed the first time I tried. If it didn't fail and this is a repost, sorry.

Today's prompt is potentially quite fantasy, if you want to take it that way.

Story: You were on a boating trip out into deep waters, hoping to see some whales. It'd been 5 hours but you still hadn't seen a single thing.

"Can we go back now?" Your son asked "I'm bored"

"Soon buddy" you replied. "Not just yet" Then suddenly you hear a loud beep from your radar, and then another one, and another. You raced over to the screen and stared at it excitedly.

"Somethings coming up" You shouted, "Quickly, look over the sides!" So everyone did, including you. You saw a faint shadow, deep in the water. Getting bigger and bigger, and closer and closer.

"Everyone hold on" You yelled Then suddenly it broke out of the surface.

Questions: What was the "thing"? Was it living or was it dead? Was it a monster or was it an animal? Or was it even a robot or a submarine. Was it from this earth or was it alien?

That's it, short one today. Go!

Is that...?

You stop in a local fast food place to pick up lunch. While you're waiting in line, you notice someone that looks like a celebrity eating in a booth in the back corner. This is someone who you know has been dead for some years. You try to ignore this creeping feeling in your mind, but it just won't go away.

Do you go up to this person and introduce yourself? Do you try to snoop around? Do you leave and have it bother you the rest of the day?

The Meal

I'm not a usual... "prompt provider", but I was using a "writing challenge" generator, to generator some prompts for me to practice with, and one of the scenarios it gave me interested me, so I thought I'd share.

"A character makes someone a meal, but the intention behind the action is not what it seems."

I've decided to alter this a bit, by making it in first person, from the perspective of either the character serving the meal, OR the character receiving the meal.

Give it a go!

submitted by old_el_paso

The Perfect Place

Today's prompt task is to write about the Perfect Place. Flesh out a character in your mind, it doesn't have to be a full complex one, just something simple will do. Then once you have a basic idea of what that character is like (looks, what they like, how old, what gender, where they're from and what they want,) imagine what the most perfect place that character could be in is.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a physical place, it could be anything. A dream job, a state of mind, a place in their life (meeting someone, finding something etc), or it could actually be a physical place, a personal utopia.

Once you've done this, think about how the character could get to this place, what do they need to do in order for that to happen? Do they have to find something (physical or mental), do they have to go somewhere, or do they only have to ask?

Finally, one you've done this, think about what the character will do after this, will they live their life differently or will they keep on living like normal? If they do live differently, how so? Is it in simple little changes in their personalty or will they go out of their way to do something big.

That's it, go!

Also, this probably doesn't need to be said, but you don't have follow the structure of this prompt, you can take it in any way you want. Even if the idea you get is in no way related to what I wrote.

And please, post any ideas you have in a comment, no matter how short or if you think they are bad. The whole point of this subreddit is to get ideas for stories and for us to help each other become better writers. Mistakes are the signposts to success. So if you wrote a "bad" little story from this prompt, post it and ask for feedback and others will give some, and you can make better stories.
